FSU beat Colorado in Coach Bowden’s 500th game; Nebraska couldn’t come back far enough to catch Virginia Tech, losing 35-30; #24 TCU lost to #2 Oklahoma in Norman and slipped back out of the Top 25; Minnesota lost at Ohio State but at least didn’t get blown out… FSU, Nebraska, and TCU are all “Others Receiving Votes” on the AP Top 25.

The Minnesota Vikings lost to Tennessee for the first time in six meetings. They are now 1-3 this year. They outgained Tennessee and scored the most points the Titans defense has allowed this year, but four sacks and four turnovers that led to 21 points is a killer.

Today, even though a new, bigger bike is arriving this week, we took the training wheels off Brooks’ old bike and worked on riding like a big kid. He got the hang of it pretty quickly (obviously been ready) and can now ride a good distance on his own before he runs out of steam. We also worked a bit on starting on his own from a standing position, as well as turning around while he’s going. We were on Piers and Alethea’s side lot so he’d have a softer surface if he fell, which only happened a couple times. We’ll soon try riding/pedaling while standing up on the pedals for more power.

Big boy Brooks is six years old today! Same age as Calvin. Here’s what the cake looks like.

Crazy results this weekend. #24 FSU tripped at home against #18 Wake Forest, committing seven turnovers, and will slip back out of the Top 25; Minnesota won and now takes its 3-0 record to #14 Ohio State; TCU stomped on SMU and will probably get into the Top 25, but plays at #2 Oklahoma next; Nebraska was idle and hosts Va Tech next week.

The Vikings got a much-needed win with their new starter, Gus Frerotte, at QB. But before we all fall in love with him, let’s remember that he hasn’t been a long-term starting QB anywhere for a reason. Although, maybe he just hasn’t been in the right system. But he’s been with the Vikes before, so this apparently isn’t it either, unless back then there was a different offense installed than now… back, forth, back, forth…

This Week In Football

My four college teams all won this weekend! FSU stomped on a I-AA school and is now back in the Top 25, Nebraska pounded a weak team too, Minnesota beat Montana State (ahem, also I-AA), and TCU beat Stanford. The other three teams all made the “Others Receiving Votes” list. However, the Vikings blew a game-long lead at the end against the Colts. Both the national and local media commented on the passing game.

Update: Tarvaris Jackson is out as quarterback; Gus Frerotte is in. If the Vikes miss the playoffs, Coach Childress is gone.

Whoops, falling down on the job here. Ok, this weekend all my teams won. Minnesota whaled on Bowling Green, Nebraska had to blow the game open in the 4th to win, Florida State won huge in their season opener, and TCU did the same. Vikings are playing at Green Bay in their opener right now. Update: dang it, they lost 24-19 after a final-minute interception near midfield. Did the 8-billion-dollar man Jared Allen not play?

Again, I’m not as into the season until the U.S. Open ends, which it just did, with Roger Federer winning his fifth straight title. It wasn’t against his arch rival, Nadal, but he’ll take it just the same. He’s now one short of Pete Sampras’ all-time Grand Slam total of 14.

Each fall, the U.S. Open and the football season overlap. I’m never ready to follow the football season closely until the Open is finished. Nevertheless, I feel a duty to report on my teams’ results from Saturday. Nebraska started the Bo Pelini era with a win, TCU beat up on New Mexico, and Minnesota squeaked one out against N. Illinois. Florida State’s, as well as the Vikings’, first game is next weekend, when finals weekend is happening at the Open…
