unlikely champion
Did anyone see the French Open final yesterday? Gaston Gaudio, the 44th-ranked player in the world, a man who had not won a tournament at all since 2002, who was 1-9 in career five-set matches before this tournament, was 15-20 in career Grand Slam matches and had never been beyond the fourth round of any Slam, saved two championship points and went on to win the title yesterday, 0-6 3-6 6-4 6-1 8-6. He beat the #3 player and fellow Argentine, Guillermo Coria, who developed a leg cramp in the fourth set but played on. Coria had won 37 of his last 38 clay-court matches, with the one loss coming to #1-ranked Roger Federer a few weeks ago, and was the favorite coming into the tournament. Gaudio’s ranking jumped 34 spots to #10!
