Laura's Junior League project

Laura is a provisional member of the Junior League and their class's project is to improve some of the playground area at the Talitha Koum (Aramaic for "My child, rise up") Nurture Center near downtown Waco. "Research shows that lower income children who do not receive help by the age of three will likely never escape the cycle of higher dropout rates, teenage birthrates, and criminal arrest rates." (Newsweek) Talitha Koum helps nurture these children so they can be productive and successful later in life. Below are three photos showing the progress of just one aspect of the Junior League Provisional Class's work.

New Vikings owner

"Reggie Fowler is ready to buy the Minnesota Vikings from Red McCombs. ... Fowler declined to reveal how much he would pay for the team, but published reports and a rival bidder, Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, put the price at about $625 million. ... Fowler said he will live in the Twin Cities area -- something the San Antonio-based McCombs didn't do. He rejected any thought of moving the team." Well, I guess that's a relief. I wonder if there will be any personnel changes...

Spoonman video

A year after I shot the footage, I finally made the Spoonman video! It features Brooks walking around with spoons, set to the Soundgarden song "Spoonman". Right now it's only in WMV format (for Windows Media Player), so some of you Mac users or those who insist on using Quicktime will have to wait a bit for me to figure out how to convert it. Also, forgive the crude video quality - it was taken with a Canon Elph instead of a DV camera. It might be easier if you right-click the thumbnail below and download it first to your computer ("Save Target As...") to view instead of watching it streaming over the Internet. FYI, its size is about 12.5 MB...

He got his first pair of Nikes yesterday! The cool shoes with the flashing lights in the soles were just getting too small. But these new ones are slick! I gotta post some pics of him...

The Vikings let their offensive coordinator go. Scott Linehan, who had been with the team for the last three years, was wooed away by the Dolphins. Offensive Line coach Steve Loney has been promoted to the vacant position. More talk about Loney's hiring. Also, trade talk for Randy Moss!?

Sure to be on every 'stupid person' list soon, Richard Hatch, the winner of the first Survivor, "has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of tax evasion for failing to report income, including the $1.01 million he won on the show."

That's how Brooks says "Happy Birthday to you!" Happy belated birthday to Laura! She got some good stuff and we had a good time Saturday (the actual day), eating with the group at a Chinese place, then having cake (I made the chocolate one!) and ice cream, followed by games.

The Eagles just didn't give the Vikings many chances, winning 27-14. A hundred yards in penalties, miscommunication on a fake FG, Eagles receivers stepping up, and an Eagles defense doing what it planned to do spelled a long day for the Vikes. But hey, they got further than people thought, beating rival Green Bay when it mattered most. Task for the off-season? Learning how to tackle properly - none of this 'bump into them hope they fall over' stuff. And maybe (same old story) better defensive players.
