Spoonman video
A year after I shot the footage, I finally made the Spoonman video! It features Brooks walking around with spoons, set to the Soundgarden song "Spoonman". Right now it's only in WMV format (for Windows Media Player), so some of you Mac users or those who insist on using Quicktime will have to wait a bit for me to figure out how to convert it. Also, forgive the crude video quality - it was taken with a Canon Elph instead of a DV camera. It might be easier if you right-click the thumbnail below and download it first to your computer ("Save Target As...") to view instead of watching it streaming over the Internet. FYI, its size is about 12.5 MB...

Ok, I haven't caught you up on Brooks (for those who don't already know this). He's been in his big-boy bed now, sleeping just fine! Dismantled the crib (sniff) and put it away. He's singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and his ABCs (a few skipped bits for each sometimes) and is counting to ten! He's saying "Please" (has been for awhile actually), "'Scuse me," and sometimes "No doggie" (no thank you), as well as "cheese" for the camera. One of the funnier things is he'll say "Hi," then feed you the next line: "Hi Brooks," except his name comes out sounding halfway between "butts" and "boots."

MN pics
First one is of Dad and Brooks last Saturday morning at Legoland in Mall of America. Then, Christophe and me at the reception following the service on Saturday evening. There's Brooks at the reception climbing a staircase to nowhere. Then my lovely wife and sister at the reception. Brooks in skullcap hat on Sunday. Christophe, Josh Rousseau, and me at dinner Sunday night. Finally, Christophe, me, and Josh late Sunday back at the hotel. We left the next afternoon.

I know I keep promising photos and then not delivering, but I'll try again this weekend. Meanwhile, The Guy has new tennis shoes and wearing them with socks makes him look like a big boy! And he drew on the wall with a crayon this week. And he's sorta singing along to songs and can kinda count to six! I say "kinda" cuz sometimes it's just mumbled and I'm not sure he really realizes he's listing sequential numbers. Maybe he is, but he may be just rattling off stuff like he would a saying or song. At any rate, pretty cool. Favorite/common sayings recently are, "almost done," "all done," and "here we go!" But he still does the nonsensical babbling too. Well, even I do that still, so maybe I shouldn't talk...

We have this little "Who Loves Baby?" book containing a bunch of pictures of family for him to see and learn. One pic is of Dad, Mom, Dama (my grandma), Martha (aunt), and Bill (uncle). He can now go down the line naming them all!" Bapa, KK, Dah, Mar-tee, Bull." Then he'll get extra excited for "boo" and start saying it louder and more enthusiastically! "BULL! BULL!" Then he'll flip the page to Grammy (other grandma) holding him as a tiny baby and say "G.G." (Great-Grammy).

Here's a long-overdue update on The Guy: he's singing along to his videos more and more, especially part of a song about the Wiggles' Captain Feathersword where the chorus goes "Hey, hey, HEY!" He likes that. He's also now started asking, "What's that?" The other day Laura and I were talking on the phone and he picked up the other phone and started saying, "HOW? HOW? HOW?" (That's his "hello" right now.) His one-man phone conversations consist of "How? How? How? Ok, ok. Bye!" When we were at the beach in Florida a couple weeks ago, he loved running up and down the wet sand towards the water and splashing (we'd play goalie, of course), then run back up and around on the sand. I will try to post some photos this weekend.

update on the guy
When we'd last left our hero, he'd been up to Minnesota and had a great trip. Recently, he's showed real development into a little boy. He plays "Where's Brooks?" by holding his hands over his eyes, asks "Where's mama?" and "Where's dada?" when we're gone at the bars (just kidding), he likes the outdoors and to get dirty out there, and is starting to sing and dance along to his shows and childrens' songs we sing to him. trip to minnesota
We went to Minnesota this past holiday weekend for my grandmother's 90th birthday and a family reunion combination. I hadn't been to Minnesota in over two years and it'd been even longer to Montevideo (zoom out). Many relatives there I hadn't seen in a decade! None of them except my grandmother had ever seen Brooks before, of course, so it was great that they could. The next time they see him, he could be in high school! We forgot our camera, so any pics will have to be sent by mom and dad before I post. And speaking of Brooks, he was a champ on the trip! We traveled for nine-plus hours each way (drive-fly-drive) and he was great - couldn't have asked for much better at all.

brooks update
He was just in for a checkup and everything's cool! He's 32.5 inches tall and weighs 24 lbs 1.1 ounce. And he just got his first real haircut! It was done at home, though, instead of at a barbershop-type place. Looks good! We have some pictures from yesterday (pre-haircut) that I hope to post up later tonight.

austin wedding weekend
My cousin got married in Austin this weekend - it was a very cool, unique ceremony and a great reception in an old church on the same property. This cool bluegrass band played and we got two CDs of theirs - I'll get their name later. Brooks was really interested in their instruments and wanted to get really close. Actually, as they warmed up, they sort of played for him while I held him up to watch. Then during the party he danced around and had a great ol' time! I'll get some pictures and movies up from it, as well as others I've been meaning to.

We have a white-noise maker in his room to use when it's his bedtime. Yesterday during the day he accidently turned it on and then ran out of the room, probably just realizing what it was! We trimmed his hair again, a little in front and in back.

Brooks is getting his first molar in, on his top right. That's seven teeth now with all but two on the top. He's currently working on going up and down our two stairs like grown-ups do rather than crawling over them. Had a couple of spills but nothing major! Also, we just inherited a piano and he likes reaching up to hit keys as he's walking by.

Brooks is cutting his fifth tooth! The one on top to his right of the front tooth. And the one on the other side isn't far behind. He can identify your and his nose ("nuh") and ears and can say "ball" ("bah")!

We've been trying to teach Brooks baby signs for things like cat, dog, light, car, stuff like that. Laura said yesterday he twice looked up to a light and reached his hand out and opened his palm to it! Incidently, that's the sign for light.

The Little Man is in a stage right now where he's especially clingy to Laura. Even when I reach for him and Laura's holding him, he wraps his arms around her neck to hold on. When he's down on the floor crawling around, he eventually sets out to find her and gets anxious if he hasn't found her before long.

Brooks update: He's "cruising" now,
Brooks update: He's "cruising" now, meaning he'll pull himself up on a short table, the ottoman, or the fireplace and walk along it using his hands for balance. That left front lower tooth has completely broken through now - not just the corner. Last week Laura and I went to a movie and Laura's cousin Jennie babysat him. He did fine up until right before we got home and after Jennie passed him back to Laura, he interrupted them by baby waving to Jennie and saying "bah bah," like "Bye bye, you are dismissed now." They busted up laughing. Not sure if we're really counting that as his frst words though. We've got some good pictures and movies from the last week or so that I need to post...

Brooks is nine months old
Brooks is nine months old today! He's motoring around the house pretty fast now. Pulling up on most everything and climbing a couple stairs. At his check-up doctor's appointment today, he weighed in at 22 lbs 6.7 oz (75th percentile) and is 29.5 inches long/tall (in the 90th)!

More new developments with the
More new developments with the Little G. He waves now. If you wave hi/bye to him, he'll open and close his hand slowly with it facing either in or out. He got a new toy yesterday: a small table-top that he can stand up against and play with its noise-makers and stuff. We also got a Baby Signs book that teaches us signs for things to communicate before he can talk. Like eat, dog, cat, mom, dad, ... Plus, new pics and videos!

Well, I guess we can
Well, I guess we can call it official. Brooks is crawling!! We took some videos of it so you'll see those soon, but he's pretty much past the scooching method and is really doing it. He still drags one knee a little I guess to use for stability, but it's time to finish baby-proofing the house! Also, he's saying "mamamamama" only when Laura's around. We think he's starting to associate her with that.
Also, we went to Louisiana for a family wedding this weekend and it was the furthest Brooks had been from home by a long shot. I suppose we really didn't give him much chance to crawl around...

Brooks is soooo close to crawling. Last night he was on all fours and was reaching for a piece of furniture and was scooting one knee at a time towards it. He used his hands to prop himself up and reach for the furniture instead of for movement, but we're getting close!

The Brookie-monster (nickname from Giles)
The Brookie-monster (nickname from Giles) is eight months old today! He's started getting fussy most of the times we change his diaper - he used to actually like it. He's now saying "Bah-bah-bah, mah-mah-mah, dah-dah-dah!" His latest foods are squash and plums, and we're going to try peaches and apricots. If he's gotten himself into a kneeling position and pitches forward, he doesn't face-plant into the floor anymore - he now catches himself with his hands. Oh, he also can flip a light switch on and off when we hold him up to it!

Brooks is getting a bit fussy more frequently now. We think he's just barely started teething although you can't see anything yet.

Brooks took two steps with
Brooks took two steps with a walker yesterday!! Laura was holding him by his waist for balance as he held the walker's handles and she said he took two steps forward. She said he then started leaning forward on the walker and it continued to move but his legs forgot to keep going! note: The walker is not the old-school type that you sit and toe around in - it's a walker sorta like elderly people might use, but with toys on it!

Brooks is now sitting up by himself and only topples over if he's reaching for something or is playing with something so hard that he loses his balance! A couple new pics taken when mom, dad, and Ali were here two weekends ago.

Brooks was playing with one
Brooks was playing with one of his toys today and was able to use it to pull himself from a sitting position on Laura's lap into sort of a kneeling position all by himself! It didn't last too long but it's another milestone! And another video...

Brooks updates - His favorite
Brooks updates - His favorite food so far is the applesauce! His latest thing is to slap his hands fast - he'll slap the top of his right hand with the palm of his left, then left with his right, over and over. We have a video of it I'll post soon. He likes rolling around a lot. Added later... Laura just fed him a banana-applesauce oatmeal combo and he loves it!

Five new pictures and five new videos of Brooks are up! We've tried a second food: green peas. Don't seem to be any problems yet but he also doesn't seem to really love them either. Maybe when we start on fruits... (later) ... tried mashed bananas but maybe he was full cuz he didn't really swallow any.

Brooks turned six months on
Brooks turned six months on Sunday! On that occasion, we tried solid foods - sweet potatoes. He was really more interested in what was holding the food (finger or baby spoon) but still got it down! No bad reactions to it so we'll try another food in a few days. At his checkup appointment yesterday, he weighed 18 lbs 14.8 oz (75th percentile), 27.5 inches long (also 75th percentile), and head circumference of 18 inches (90th)! He'll be pretty much head-heavy until he's almost two (typical for most babies), the doctor said. The funniest thing happened last night: I was carrying him facing out and we were running around a lighted driveway and he was laughing harder and longer than he ever has! At first we thought he was crying but he was loving it! Pics to come soon...

Couple things I forgot to
Couple things I forgot to mention yesterday about Brooks' progress. 1) He can sit in the stroller by himself without having to be in the car seat placed in the stroller (as you can see in his pictures), and 2) he's rolling from back to front and back again all the time now.

Little Guy is getting better
Little Guy is getting better at balancing while sitting. He's not hunched over as much anymore. He likes to kick in the bath water. He poked a hole in the foot of a nighttime outfit with his big toe. He's a happy guy (smiling) much of the time and still likes to stare at you intently, especially if you're new or he hasn't seen you in awhile. Some more photos are up!

Brooks update: he's almost able
Brooks update: he's almost able to balance on his own in a sitting-up position (mostly in a tripod position with hands on the floor next to his feet), he really likes looking at and grabbing for bottles and Sprite cans, he likes the Superman theme song, and he likes a drum-and-bass beat where I pat his back and hum a tune. Brooks has started to grab
Brooks has started to grab at things. Like when holding him, he'll grab for your lip or ears or hair. And when I got home last night, he smiled at me the first time he saw me! And, as promised awhile back, here's a short video of him in his Ultrasaucer!! The sounds in the background are from his Baby Beethoven video.

Little Guy is four months
Little Guy is four months old today! He had his checkup appointment this morning, which included the second round of immunization shots. Naturally, he didn't like it but it wasn't as bad as last time. At his six-month appt, he'll only have three shots and then that will be it! He was also measured at this appt and is now 16 lbs 6 oz and 26 inches long. That's in the 75th percentile in both categories and his head (can't remember the exact number) is in the 90th! He's started holding his feet up in the air when he's on his back too. I also posted up a few more pics of him!

Brooks went to his first Musikgarten (music development for babies and toddlers) this morning. Laura said he smiled when his name was called and he was checking out the other babies, all older by about five months! There's a new picture of Brooks, now sitting up with some help.

Brooks played in his UltraSaucer
Brooks played in his UltraSaucer for the first time today! About a minute after first being set in there, all of his limbs shot out in all directions as if the UltraSaucer's purpose suddenly came to him! Laura got a short video of it and I'll post it. Also, he's about 16 pounds now and has moved up to a size 3 diaper. So, take note!

Merry Christmas yesterday! Brooks cashed
Merry Christmas yesterday! Brooks cashed in huge: he got several outfits, about 6 or 7 90-diaper packages, and toys he doesn't yet know how to play with! But he'll soon get into them. Pics to come.
Brooks' progress report: one gift was a little rattle that I introduced to his hand and he grabbed onto it himself and held on for a while! That's the first time he's done that! And when I was holding him over my shoulder, he grabbed the cotton cloth off my shoulder and dropped it to the ground. Also, he also must recognize voices (other than Laura's, of course), because he's looking around when he hears familiar ones. His favorite thing right now seems to be when we lie him down on his back on the couch or bed and put our hands on the bed and lightly shake it - he smiles and coos huge then!

Brooks is a big three-month
Brooks is a big three-month old today! He now likes to show you his dukes with a determined look on his face! He rolled over for the first time on Friday but wouldn't when we tried again later that night. Also, I've been saying that he's sleeping through the night. That's really from my perspective - I haven't had to get up at night to change a diaper (my job) and he hasn't been crying into the wee hours either. But he had been nursing and a little squirmy every now and then, Laura said. Not fully asleep though. But he has really slept thru the night (2am to 8am) that last couple of nights - no real squirming or need to nurse!

More family descended into town
More family descended into town for Brooks' baptism yesterday (parents and grandmother came for the weekend). The little man was perfect: not a peep during the whole thing! In fact, he slept through the whole ordeal! Laura did have to walk around with him once during the service before we went up there though. He wore the same baptismal gown that Ali, my dad, my grandfather, and I wore. His little cap was the one Ali and I wore (we also had the one dad and my grandpa wore but it was too discolored from age to match). Pictures to come later today (hopefully), as well as video soon! Also, Brooks is ten weeks today! Double digits...

Brooks is seven weeks today! We bought a Sound Spa that plays white noise, a heartbeat, summer night noises, a mountain stream, ocean waves, and spring rain. The sounds help him calm down if he's fussy - some remind him of being in the womb.

New pics of Brooks including a video! His hair is almost totally gone now except for a few small light patches and wisps. He went on his first walk yesterday with Laura up to the park and then again today! Brooks is five weeks old
Brooks is five weeks old today and is already going bald! Actually, he IS losing some of his hair - a normal occurence in babies where at least some of their hair falls out and new hair grows in. Sorta like baby teeth and adult teeth. So who knows if he'll end up with curly or straight, light or dark hair! Specifically, it's coming out not in the back (yet), but in the top-front area.

Brooks is three weeks old today! Four hours of sleep per night is typical so far. But he's pretty good, I think. He's almost smiling, but then he goes back to being expressionless. Well, sometimes he furrows his brow. And he's flailing.

Brooks is a week old
Brooks is a week old tonight! He's doing really well - his eating and um... expelling are progressing normally and he had his first outing today to Laura's checkup appointment, then Best Buy, but then stayed in the car with Laura for the last stop at Pep Boys for a rear windshield shade. In the next day or so, I want to post up a short video of him just wiggling around, so watch for that!
